I was born Sept. 7, 1870 at Pleasant Grove "the ward now being known as Lindon" in a one-roomed log house with a dirt roof situated at the foot of a large sand hill and at that time the last house before crossing Provo Bench. I was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of L.D.S. in June 1879 by my father "Henry Dittmore" and confirmed by Lewis Harvy. I spent my girlhood days at Lindon. I acted as treasurer of the Primary Association for several years and as assistant secretary in Relief Society, which position I held at the time of my marriage.
Was married to David Call Dec 2nd 1891 in the Logan Temple. I have resided since at Bountiful. I now have seven sons and two daughters, their names are found on opposite [top] page.
My husband spent nearly three years in the Southern States on a mission. My oldest son is now in the British mission and was there when the war broke out. My life has been greatly influenced by the good council and advice of my parents. I am trying to set an example before my children that will lead them in the path of life and salvation.
Historical Sketch of Henry Dittmore and Rachel Smuin
My father Henry Dittmore was the son of George Nicholas Dittmore and Christina Maria Heiner. He was born June 8, 1836 in Waldorf, Sax Meiningum, Germany, where his parents lived and died. He left his native land when 19 years old for America. He spent 4 years in Pennsylvania and while there he heard and embraced the Gospel of Jesus Christ, being baptized by Elder Angus M. Cannon.
In the Spring of 1860 in company with his sister and others, he started the hazardous journey across the plains with ox teams, arriving in Salt Lake City Sept 1st 1860. He immediately went to work for D. H. Well, where he spent the next two years and a half or til he married Rachel Smuin 11 March 1864 (my mother).
She was the daughter of Thomas Smuin and Sarah Hook. She was born 6 May 1844 in Abingdon, Berkshire, England. She left her native land in 1863 for Utah. Her parents joined the Church of Jesus Christ before she was born.
After their marriage, my father still worked for Bro. Wells two years, then he moved to Morgan City. Two years later they moved to Pleasant Grove, where they made their permanent home. Twelve children were welcomed to their home, two having died in infancy. The oldest son was accidentally killed by falling from a loaded wagon when nearly 6 years old. The rest - 6 girls and 3 boys - grew to manhood and womanhood.
They passed through many trials of hardship incident in early days, but through it all they remained faithful to the Gospel, and taught their children to be honest, truthful and to put their trust in God. My Grandfather Thomas Smuin lived in the family five years, two years of which he was helpless.
