Rampton Family Reunion

The descendants of one of Bountiful’s prominent citizens, Henry Rampton (1829-1903), held a reunion in our community this past Saturday, June 24, 2006. A highlight of their visit was the unveiling of a Rampton Family Plaque located on 100 North between Main Street and 100 West in an area where more than three generations of Rampton’s settled and were born and raised. The plaque talks about the Henry Rampton family coming to Bountiful in 1856 and about Henry setting up his blacksmith shop on the northwest corner of Main & 1st North. The plaque also tells about the birth of former Utah Governor Calvin L. Rampton who was born and raised in this area. Information on the plaque goes on to tell about Charles R. Mabey another former Governor of Utah, who lived almost next door to the Rampton’s and married one of Henry’s granddaughters. The Bountiful Historical Commission members hosted the Rampton family during this occasion and also designated 100 North between Main and 100 West as “Governor’s Lane.” This makes for a rather unique street in Bountiful and in the State of Utah, being the only street from which came 2 of Utah’s Governors. Members of the Rampton families also toured some of the Rampton family homes that are still in the area and enjoyed a step back in time when Bountiful was in its early beginnings around the 1860’s. The Rampton’s also toured the Bountiful Historical Museum and presented the Commission with a beautiful large photograph of the Henry Rampton children. Jean Rampton Nelson, a descendant of Henry Rampton presented the gift to Dean Collinwood, Chairman of the BHC. The gift will be prominently displayed in the museum along with information about the Rampton family and their Blacksmith business in Bountiful throughout the years.
