A Purple Heart Award will be awarded to an employee when he or she is seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.

Medal of Valor

This award is given to an officer who intelligently gives his or her life in the performance of law enforcement duties; or, performs a distinguished act of courage involving imminent risk or danger to his or her life above and beyond the call of duty.

Chief's Star

This award may be awarded to a member for exceptional performance of duty, such as:

1. Apprehension of a suspect(s) whose crime(s) seriously exposed any person to death or serious physical injury.

2. Accomplishment of highly creditable and/or unusual law enforcement actions.

3. Accomplishment clearly above that which is normally expected and that materially contributed to the success of a major investigation, project, or operation.

Distinguished Service Medal

This award will be presented to an individual for superior or sustained performance accomplished in a manner above and beyond expected professional standards. Criteria may include:

1. Personal qualities of self-motivation, dedication, persistence, strength of character, and leadership when used in the exceptional performance of duty.

2. Major milestone accomplishments resulting from long term, specifically assigned projects.

3. An action which brings honor or distinction to the department.

Unit Citation

A Unit Citation for outstanding performance may be conferred upon an organizational unit of the department for a commendable accomplishment resulting from a combined effort by the members of the unit. Awarding the Unit Citation does not preclude the conferring of individual awards to members of the unit for individual accomplishments.

Certificate of Merit

1. Long and faithful service.

2. Successfully accomplishing a special assignment, operation or program requiring thoroughness, conscientiousness, determination and initiative in the performance of a difficult task.

3. Saving or attempting to save a life, when the lifesaving actions fall within the realm of professional responsibilities and standards of conduct.

Life Saving Award

Given to an officer or communications officer who significantly aids in saving a human life.

1. May involve rescue operations where imminent loss of life is present.

2. May include telephone CPR given by a communications officer.

Citizen Service Award

A Citizen Service Award may be awarded to a member of the community who has aided the police department members or rendered meritorious service to the community law enforcement effort.
