Bicycle Safety Do’s and Don’ts
Do:
- Ride with traffic and stay to the right side of the road.
- Obey all traffic regulations (See seasonal laws).
- Use appropriate hand signals for turning, stopping, and merging.
- Use appropriate lighting and wear reflective clothing when riding at night.

- Walk your bike across the street at corners or crosswalks.
- Look both ways before crossing a street.
- Always wear a bicycle helmet.
DON'T:
- Show off, race, or perform stunts in traffic.
- Hitch rides on trucks or cars.
- Tailgate or ride too closely to cars or trucks.
- Carry more passengers than the bike is designed for.
- Carry items that will get in your way.
Being Home Alone
- Check in with a responsible family member or neighbor as soon as you get home.
- Know how to call 911, the emergency number for your area, or the operator.
- Know how to give directions to your house in the event of an emergency.
- Never accept rides, gifts, or offer help to people unless your parents know about it first.
- Know how to use locks on the doors and windows.
- Know how to use the alarm system if you have one.
- Never let anyone you don’t know into your home.
- Never let a caller on the phone or at the door that you are home alone. Tell them your Mom or Dad can’t come to the phone or door right now.
- Carry a house key on your person. Don’t leave it outside where it can be found by a stranger.
- Know how to escape in case of a fire.
- Tell your parents about anything or anyone that you feel uncomfortable around.
- If you think you are being followed, go into a business that is occupied.
Being Safe at School
- Settle arguments by talking, not fighting.
- Don't use drugs or alcohol and report people who do.
- Tell the police, your teacher, a parent if you think a crime has been committed.

- Report suspcious people or activity.
- Know where you can get help while travelling to and from school.
