Emergency Alerts – Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office
Bountiful Police Communications and Davis County has instituted a rapid emergency notification service called Everbridge. The new system will distribute emergency messages via telephone or email to targeted areas. This system is similiar to a reverse 911 call. Everbridge employs a one-of-a-kind Internet mapping capability for geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a high speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized pre-recorded emergency messages directly to homes and businesses, live individuals and answering machines.

Everbridge Sign-up Link

This service can be used in case of fires, chemical spills, evacuations, lock downs, downed power lines, lost individuals, natural disasters, abductions, water system problems, bomb threats, or other emergencies. Calls can be geographically targeted for localized messaging.

Residents are welcome and encouraged to enter their contact information for home, business, and mobile phones so they may be contacted by the system in the event of an emergency. It is important for residents to register, especially if they use unlisted numbers, cell phones, or VOIP. Those who do not register their address and phone number may not be notified with Everbridge in the case of an emergency. Registration is confidential, free, and easy.

About

The Bountiful City Police Department currently has a police force of 38 officers. These 38 officers are divided among the different divisions that make up the department, such as patrol, detectives, school resource officers, and administrators. Many of the officers in the department are assigned to areas of responsibility above and beyond their primary duties. For example, a patrol officer may also be on call for crime lab assignments, the SWAT team, or a detective may work at a junior high or elementary school in the P.R.O.S. program. The Bountiful City Police Department provides services to a community of approximately 45,000 residents.

The department also operates its own communications center. It currently has 14 dispatchers, and provides dispatch services for South Davis Metro Fire, and the police departments of Bountiful, West Bountiful, Woods Cross, and North Salt Lake. Dispatchers are the individuals that answer the phone when you call our business line or 911 and play a very important role providing emergency services for the community.

The dedication and efforts of these individuals, allows the police department to provide the citizens and businesses of Bountiful with efficient and effective police, fire, and medical services.

Administration

The Administration Division is responsible for the department’s overall direction and planning. It oversees all divisions of the police department and provides supervision that coordinates department policies, which affect all aspects of the department. Administration is responsible for overseeing all employees and providing them with necessary training to maximize their effectiveness within the community. Administration also manages the department budget and financial planning which includes maintaining cost-effective programs throughout the department.

Communications Division

The Bountiful City Police Department operates its own communications center and dispatches for Police and Fire from Kaysville City to North Salt Lake City. The center is staffed with 20 full time dispatchers which includes, 3 lead dispatchers, and 1 dispatch supervisor. It is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The primary objective of the communications division is to ensure prompt, efficient response and assistance to persons requesting emergency service, as well as to ensure the support and safety of police and fire personnel.

Tips when calling 911:

KNOW WHERE THE EMERGENCY IS OCCURRING

An exact street address is best. Look at numbers posted on buildings around you. View the street signs to provide an address or intersection.

If you are driving, be aware of the road or highway on which you are traveling. Look for landmarks or businesses that are near to your location.

It is a good idea to post your address and phone number near your telephone. In an emergency situation it is easy to forget the most basic of information.

STAY AS CALM AS YOU CAN

Remain calm and patient.

Take a deep breath before speaking. Time seems to slow down when you are in an emergency. Your cooperation is essential to quickly getting help started.

Briefly state the nature of the call.

“I need to report a fire….” Or “I need to report a break-in at my home”.

LET THE 9-1-1 CALLTAKER ASK THE QUESTIONS

Even if the calltaker’s questions seem unrelated or repetitious, let the calltaker lead the conversation and answer their questions. Calltakers are trained to gather information in a certain order to quickly assess the situation and decide what assistance is best to help you. They may need to clarify a previous answer, or may already be aware of the situation you are reporting and need to find out if you have any additional information.

STAY ON THE LINE IF YOU CAN

Stay on the line until the 9-1-1 calltaker tells you they have all the information they need. In some instances, they will ask if you can stay on the phone with them until officers arrive. This is to gather additional information if the situation changes before officers arrive.

If it is not safe for you to stay on the phone, let the calltaker know this immediately.

IF YOU MISDIAL – DON’T HANG UP

If you misdial and accidentally call 9-1-1, DO NOT hang up! Wait until your call is answered and explain that you misdialed.

If you hang up, a calltaker will call you back to see if you have a police or fire emergency. If the calltaker is unable to reach you, police response will be sent to your location to check on your welfare.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT 9-1-1

Teach your children about what 9-1-1 is and when it is okay to call 9-1-1. Let them know that playing with the phone and calling 9-1-1 is a bad idea because it may cause the line to be tied up and someone who is really in trouble may not get help as quickly. Also, do not let children play with disconnected cell phones without taking out the battery. A disconnected cell phone is capable of dialing 9-1-1.

Investigations Divison

The Bountiful Police Department Criminal Investigations division consists of several areas. Each consist of specialized units that investigate crimes specific to their expertise. Personnel assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division includes sworn detectives, police officers, and civilian employees.

Functions within this division include:

  • Crime Lab

The Bountiful Police Department has Crime Lab personnel that respond to crime scenes for the purpose of processing and documenting evidence. Crime Lab Technicians typically take photographs, video, and/or diagram the scene.

If feasible, they might also collect and package evidence at the scene and search for fingerprints or DNA if the situation calls for it. If processing the evidence requires special knowledge or equipment it is sent to the state or county crime lab. Physical Evidence can play an important role in solving crimes, exonerating the innocent, and prosecuting the guilty.

  • Detectives

The Bountiful Police Department Detective Division is tasked with follow-up or supplemental investigation of felony and serious misdemeanor crimes that occur in the City of Bountiful. In most cases, if a patrol officer cannot immediately resolve a case, or handle a case where specialized training is required, it will be referred to detectives.

The Detective Division is made up of 4 full time Detectives, and 1 Sergeant. Although each detective brings with him or her years of experience and knowledge which encompass all areas of law enforcement, each has an area of expertise.

Detectives are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days per week for critical incidents.

If you would like to follow-up with an active investigation or speak to a detective regarding a case that is in-active, please contact Police Dispatch at 801-298-6000 and they will route your call accordingly.

Any new crime you wish to report, will be handled by the patrol division.

  • Evidence

Our Evidence Custodian maintains the Property Room.  Officers collect property items for various purposes.  The primary purpose for which we collect property is evidence of a crime, such as illegal substances and/or property to be processed for fingerprints.  We also receive found property, property that must be held for safe keeping, and recovered stolen property. Officers submit items to evidence where it is stored until the case is adjudicated, or the conditions of found property and safekeeping are satisfied.

    Important Information:

    • Found property is held for 90 days, then disposed of unless the person that turned it in contacts the department to take possession of it.  We publish a list summarizing property eligible for disposal prior to disposing of it.  Found Property Eligible for Disposal (link to PDF)
    • If an officer takes possession of property for safekeeping, the owner must contact the Evidence Custodian within 30 days to obtain the item(s).
    • If the Bountiful City Police take possession of a firearm for any purpose, the owner of the firearm must prove ownership of the firearm and undergo a background check through the Bureau of Criminal Identification before the firearm can be released.
    • When items have been cleared for disposal, they are either sent to auction or destroyed depending on their value.
    • Bicycles are booked into the bicycle impound.  Most of the bicycles have been turned in or collected as found property.  If your bicycle is missing, call to find out if it is in the impound.  The bicycles are all sent to the Davis County Children’s Justice Center in Farmington for an annual auction in the spring if no one claims them.

If you need to pick up property or evidence, call 801-298-6023 or email evidence@bountiful.gov (email is preferred) and make an appointment.  Arrangements can be made to pick up certain items after hours or on weekends with prior notification.

The Evidence Custodian is typically available Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 4 PM.

  • Problem Oriented Policing (P.O.P.)

The Problem Oriented Policing Unit (POP Unit) of the Bountiful Police Department is a specialized unit which deals with a wide range of community problems and crime prevention. The detectives in the POP Unit have developed an understanding of community problems and work to develop solutions to them.

Due to the flexibility of the POP Unit, detectives assigned are able to address the issues or concerns occurring within the community. Their primary duties are:

    • Monitor Sex Offenders residing in Bountiful
    • Oversee the Crime Free Housing program
    • Drug  investigation; i.e. manufacturing, distribution, possession and use
    • Identify and document Gang members and activity
    • Graffiti
    • Prostitution
    • Warrants

The POP Unit also assists patrol and detectives with traditional police services.  They maintain a working relationship with other City, County, and State Agencies.  The POP Unit is always looking for community partners to help combat crime.  We are fully aware our citizens are our greatest source of information,  we always do everything we can to maintain the confidentiality of information between citizens and the police. South Davis Metropolitan S.W.A.T. Team is made up of members from the Bountiful Police Department, Centerville Police Department, Farmington Police Department, Kaysville Police Department, Woods Cross Police Department, and the West Bountiful Police Department.

S.W.A.T. stands for Special Weapons and Tactics.  The S.W.A.T. team is compromised of two elements: Tactical Response and Crisis Negotiations. The South Davis Metropolitan S.W.A.T. Team is part of the Crisis Response Unit.

S.W.A.T. teams respond to non-routine situations that the patrol division doesn’t have the personnel, time, equipment, or training to address.  The S.W.A.T. team’s primary objective is to resolve issues as safely as possible.  They do this by attempting to isolate the problem, utilize negotiators to negotiate the safe release of victims and hostages, and facilitate the peaceful surrender of suspects.
