SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY AT HOME
Summer Energy-Savings Tips
- Set your air conditioner thermostat as high as comfortable – experts recommend 78º or higher when you’re home. If you are replacing your thermostat, consider a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat technology to automatically adjust the temperature.
- Have your central air conditioner tuned up and clean or replace filters monthly for more efficient operation.
- Keep the blinds and windows closed during the day and open during cooler evening hours.
- Use ceiling and portable fans to stay comfortable.
- Minimize indoor heat: run the dryer and dishwasher at night on hot days and let your dishes air dry. Avoid heat-generating incandescent lighting and use a microwave, toaster oven or outdoor grill instead of the oven. When possible, it's best to avoid the use of major appliances between 2 and 8 p.m.
- Clean the lint filter in the dryer after every use and wash clothes in cold water – many detergents are now formulated to be efficient in with cold water.
- Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use. Plug home electronics, such as TVs, DVD players and computers into power strips and turn off the power strips when the equipment is not in use.
- Set your water heater to 120º and use efficient showerheads.

Eliminate, or deactivate, extra freezers or refrigerators if you can, especially if they spend the summer outdoors or in a garage.

If you have a pool: consider slowly reducing pool filtration time by 30 minute increments daily. Keep on reducing the time as long as the water appears clean. You may find you only need to run your pool filter six hours a day. Install a timer to control the length of time that the pool pump cycles on.
Winter Energy-Savings Tips
- When you are home and awake, set your thermostat as low as comfortable. We recommend 68°F or below in the winter. When you are asleep or out of the house, lower the setting by several degrees. If you are replacing your thermostat, consider a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat technology to automatically adjust the temperature.
- Cover drafty windows with a heavy duty, clear plastic sheet on the inside of window frames during winter months. Keep the blinds open during the day – the sun will help to heat your home.
- Set your water heater to 120°F and use efficient showerheads.
- Clean the lint filter in the dryer after every use and wash clothes in cold water – many detergents are now formulated to be efficient in with cold water.
- Use your dishwasher at full capacity, and air dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher’s drying cycle.
- Switch to ENERGY STAR qualified LED bulbs. The Lighting Facts label can help you compare brightness (lumens), light appearance (warm to cool) and operating costs.
- Set refrigerator temperature between 37° and 40°F, and your freezer at 0°F.
- Unplug old refrigerators in garages or basements that might be used as storage, but are inefficient and not fully utilized.
- Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use. Plug home electronics, such as TVs, DVD players and computers into power strips and turn off the power strips when the equipment is not in use.
- Improve your home’s heating and cooling systems by cleaning or replacing furnace filters and scheduling routine system maintenance to help air flow through the system more efficiently.
